What is Tufting?

Rug tufting is a hands-on, creative process in which you “color with yarn” using a tufting gun that pushes yarn through the fabric to create colorful, textured designs. At Common Thread, it’s easy to learn, beginner-friendly, and seriously satisfying — you’ll walk away with a finished piece you designed yourself!

A computer screen displaying a red pencil icon and a drawing application interface, with a toolbar on the left side.

Design it.

Sketch or choose your design — we’ll help you trace it onto the frame.

Tuft it.

Use a tufting gun to “draw” your design with yarn on the canvas.

Illustration of three electrical tools: a blue electric drill, an orange wire stripper, and a blue soldering iron, with a power plug at the top left.

Carve it.

Glue, carve, trim, and back your rug for a smooth finish. In most workshops, we’ll take care of this part for you.
